YSU Alert is the emergency notification text messaging system for Youngstown State University. In the event of an emergency, a text message will be sent to the mobile number and/or email registered with the system. This service is provided by YSU at no cost to students; however, message and data rates may apply.
What is YSU Alert?
YSU Alert is the emergency notification text messaging system for YSU. It is used by YSU as a way to instantly reach mobile devices when an urgent situation needs to be communicated.
How do I register?
YSU students, parents, faculty and staff can register by clicking the appropriate button to the left and entering your mobile number and/or email address. You will receive a text confirming that you have opted into the alert system to receive emergency notifications.
Can I register via text?
Yes. You can register from your cell phone. For students and parents, text YSU Alert to 69310. For faculty and staff, text FS Alert to 69310. You must remove all signatures and other texts in the body of your message. You will receive a confirmation message letting you know you have been signed up to receive YSU alerts.
How will I know when a text is from YSU Alert?
Your YSU Alert messages will come to you from the number 69310. Program this number as “YSU Alert” in your phone. That way, you will know when YSU is texting you.
Does YSU Alert cost anything to use?
There is no cost for an individual who has registered for the alerts; however, your cell phone carrier might charge you to receive text messages, so please check your plan.
What type of alerts will I receive?
You will only receive emergency notifications and campus closings issued by YSU. If you choose, you may also receive weather advisories (tornado only).
Will all cell phone carriers deliver YSU Alert messages?
Yes. YSU is using a service provider that works with all major cell phone providers. Text messages will be sent to your carrier for delivery to your phone. While it is extremely unlikely that you would not receive a YSU Alert message, signal strength and other issues with your carrier could impact delivery to your phone.
Will I receive ads or SPAM on my phone?
No. Inspiron Logistics, the company behind the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS), does not tolerate spam text or email messages. Your privacy is important to us. See Inspiron's privacy statement at: http://www.inspironlogistics.com/privacy.cfm.
Can I register my parents or other family members to receive alerts?
Yes. Only YSU faculty, staff, and students can sign up for YSU Alert However, you can include parents or others on your account. If you register others, you are responsible for notifying them about the service. Your parents can also register on their own.
I don't use text messages. Can I receive YSU Alert by email?
Yes. When you sign up online, fill in your email address in the proper field. You will be sent your emergency notification through the email address that you registered.
What if I change my mobile carrier and receive service through another company?
You will still receive alerts so long as you have the same phone number.
What happens if I change my phone number?
You will need to re-register so that you can resume receiving alerts.
How can I stop receiving the alerts?
There are a few ways to stop receiving alerts:
You can simply text STOP to 69310 from your phone
You can send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org
You can return to the location where you signed up and click on "unsubscribe."
How do I add to, change, or update my registration information?
Unfortunately, the only way to add to, change, or update your registration information is to unsubscribe and re-subscribe.
What should I do if I am not receiving text alerts?
First, have a friend send you a text to ensure that your texting function is working properly. Second, call Lieutenant Shawn Varso or Officer Danica Burrows at 330-941-3527 and we will help you troubleshoot the problem. Or text HELP to 69310 for additional information.
